WHY WALDORF?

Community vs Individualism

At Mountain Song we honor that humans belong in relationship. We seek to develop ourselves as unique and beautiful beings, who then offer care and compassion to those around them, forging strength together in a world that often separates us and encourages unnecessary forms of competition. Healthy community requires practiced reciprocity and respect. We see ourselves as part of a greater whole, alive in our own contributions and worthiness.

Uprightness vs Independence

It is important for young children to develop their individual capacities and confidence, but it is also crucial to respect our inter-dependence and the natural need for help. A child who stands upright, both physically and spiritually, is a child who trusts themselves. They take risks, stand up for others, and ware willing to make mistakes because they have built a strong sense of self. This courage is true self-love that will be their foundation in all the challenges life brings them.

Comprehension vs Rote Memorization

True literacy comes from a depth of understanding ourselves and the world around us. While memorization is an important tool at any stage of learning, it can be short term and surface level without enrichment. Through working in collaboration with peers, creative inquiry, artistic experiences, and movement, children engage with subjects through their whole body and system. This approach makes space for knowledge to sink in, rather than information be regurgitated.
